    Networked photo album software

    Hello All,

Does anyone know anything about network-capable, more-than-one-user-at-a-time photo album / image management software? We have a bunch of photos sitting on a (Linux) server. We keep on taking more and more digital photos (we're actually going to have to get a dedicated server just for photos at this rate...). We would like some way of teachers and pupils to be able to nicely manage photos. We would like pupils to be able to view and edit their own photos, but just view the all-access ones. We'd like teachers to be able to view and edit their own photos, view the all-access ones, and add their own selected photos to the all-access list. Things like cropping, rotation and red-eye removal would come in handy. Speedy and easy bulk operation is a good idea. Cross-platform would be good (we have Windows, Linux and now Mac machines). An image tagging feature would be nice, too.

Google Picasa would seem to provide the image editing capabilities we want, but does anyone have experience of it running on a network? I see that it keeps an index file in each directory of images that it visits... Does this mean it has to have write access to any directory of images it wants to look at? How well does multiple copies of Picasa looking at the one directory simultaneously work?

Has anyone used Adobe Photo Album - the version that comes with PDF Reader?

Multiple-users, simultaneous-access - sounds like a web-based solution would be best. Gallery2 doesn't quite seem to be what we want though, and the user interface is a bit slow.

    Anyone any recommendations?

We host all of our school photos on the intranet using sharepoint and upload them with MS Picture manager to make it easy for the staff.

Gallery2, I've found to be epic for this sort of thing, due to the fact that with a simple registry key (that they provide) you can use the "publish to web" feature of windows XP to publish the photos in a local folder to the site pretty quickly instead of filling in web forms.

Gallery2 is a popular choice too... open source and feature-full.

Another easy to use photo album is zenphoto. It's very very reminiscent of the original clutter free coppermine gallery.
