Netgear Switches - things I found
Just been playing about with some Netgear Switches I bought, they do have 'quirks' lol but I'll try and note down some here in case it helps others (EduGeek has given me massive load of help before)..I will update this thread as I get to grips with the things.
I have bought GS724TP, GS724TPS, GSM7328S and GSM7328FS
1) Watch the depth of the GSM724TPS (310mm) add your stacking HDMI cables and Mains Plug it won't fit a lot of my wall cabinets (I had to buy right angled mains plugs)
2) Firmware updating on the switches isn't the most intuitive, I used the Smartwizard discovery tool to update the firmware I took a while to find out why the switch firmly stuck to the previous firmware version. Turned out I needed to unzip the firmware file first as a .ROS file (my bad - I should RTFM lol) but it seems the Smartwizard utility will upload anything and try to apply without giving a meaningful error message, so keeps you scratching your head with what's gone wrong.
3) The web browser on the GS724TS / TPS is absolutely atrocious , to the point I was worried about whether I made the wrong choice of switch for my school, it was slow, locked up often and very unresponsive. I later tried Google Chrome (20.0.1132.57 m) and the difference is massive (I was using IE 8-9 before) now the web console is actually usable.
4) I have read on Netgear Forums that STP (Spanning tree) is on globally by defualt on GS724TP/TPS..which have cause people network slow downs and high switch CPU utilisation , so indeed looking at the GS724TP/TPS I have STP is on by defualt. I have turned off the settings for now.
