Hardware Asset Management!!
Hi All,
Jst wondering how other people manage/audit there PC hardware.
We use SMS to audit our software.
Our current system for keeping track of PC's etc is manually auditing the hardware by writing down serial numbers in rooms and inputting this into a simple access database.
We now have nearly 2000 PC's so this is becoming rather tedious!!
I have been looking at using Asset Tags with Barcodes and using barcode scanners when we need to audit.
Does anybody have any recommendations for any packages available etc.?
Thanks in advance

We use GLPI with OCS-NG here, with asset tags on anything worth more than £100. It does a scan of the hardware and software, puts it in the database and you can then put things like inventory numbers in. I'm yet to check its usefulness with a barcode scanner though.

Spiceworks - scans the network, picks up everything S/N. monitors hd space, warns of errors, low toners in printers etc. only have to add Asset numbers as not clever ebough to read labels. lol.
Re: Hardware Asset Management!!
Get yerself some asset tags with a barcode on incase you go barcode scanning in future. The initial tagging of everything is the worse part but if you keep on top of it and update it as and when assets are moved you will find this much easier. Also it will impress your bursar when they ask for the entire yearly IT asset list and that they wanted it 2 days ago
If you do get asset tags make sure you get the ones that are difficult/nigh on impossible to peel off :)
