Laptop Chargers :S

Hiya,

This is a really odd one and is confusing us all at Dene Magna.

I have an Ergo Ensis 211 with a faulty power supply, the strain reliever on transformer is broken and would only charge when held in a certain position. I got a replacement power supply out of the cupboard and plugged it in and wont charge the laptop. I have tried 5 other power supplies they wont charge either. I have made sure that they are the exact same Voltage and Amps as they are from the same batch of laptops, but I have checked and double checked again.

We have tested the power supplies on a Multimeter and they are all outputting the right voltage, and I have tested them in two other laptops and they are working fine.

Any ideas anybody? This is really frustrating and I have ran out of ideas.

Confusing...good luck.

Checkout the size of the hole on the power supply plug ... there are large holes and small holes ... if you use one with a large hole and the laptop socket pin is a small type then it wont work ... sorry if this is a bit basic but its the only thing I can think of right now !!!

And polarity of the connector.

might seem obvious but checked where it connects to the laptop, jusr coincidence when moving one end of cable it makes connection at the other? Had a few laptops with broken/faulty laptop connection that needed cable holding in certain position.

It could be the dc jack on the laptop motherboard itself.

I have had exactly the same problem with a laptop connector. It would only charge if I held the plug in a certain position. When I opened up the computer to get at the motherboard, holding the plug to one side had sheared the pin on the socket away from the motherboard.

I have had this problem with several of the Ensis laptops, they seem to be very prone to it.

It will probably be a dry joint on the main board where the DC socket is soldered on. The solution is to strip the laptop down and resolder the joints.

Well, we had the laptop come in initially, it would only charge if you held the connector in a certain position. Rather than pull it apart to look at the motherboard etc I decided that I would get the same model out of spares, which had a broken screen, swap the screens and hard drive over, hey presto, laptop that works, until I went to plug the power in LOL. In the end I put it down the the hole in the plug being slightly smaller than the other power supplies, because we have a lot of spare power supplies from Microlight XL's that we use, and are successful with all the other laptops that we have, apart from what seems to be the Ensis 211. I found the original power supply fir this chassis and it was OK. All prt of learning i suppose lol, measured the holes and the difference in size in minimal, just shows how much a little difference can make.

I'm sure that the majority of us that over the years have been driven up the wall for a problem that turned out to be simple !! Glad you got it sorted
