Hello all. I'm new to the forums but they have come in very handy so far. We are having major issues at the moment with kids stealing keyboard keys. I was just wondering what other people do to deal with this as I am getting really annoyed with ordering loads of keyboard. Thanks.
You need to get the Teachers involved with checking the state of the room before they start the lesson and noting any problems.
Have a search - there are lots of threads about vandalism on here. Really to make a change - you need the Head and preferably the SLT on side and recharge the departments for damage that happens - it seems to focus their minds then.
If teachers have seating plans it makes it easier to tell who's stealing if the next teacher checks before lesson starts.
We keep keys from old broken keyboards, and replace as soon as we are notified - the kids get bored soon enough. Also, get your teaching staff to do checks as others have said.
We have a bunch of old keyboards that we use to replace keys but recently it just got out of control and we didn't have enough spare keys. We have tried getting the teachers to check the room before and after the lessons but most of them seem to resent the extra work and then people argue over what was there at the beginning of the lesson and it just gets difficult. Either that or they just forget and nothing gets recorded. It's all very annoying.
Record who has used which PC with a script. We do it, and it's proved very effective at tracing back to when the vandalism took place.
We've started a policy whereby the last person logged in gets charged *unless* they show any damaged / missing mice, keyboards etc. to their teacher before they log in. Seems to work, we record logins too.
I'd just shut the room if it gets too bad, then the teachers can't teach. Whose fault is it then?
