Primary School looking for hardware / software forward planning advice
I’m looking for some advice on forward planning for ICT hardware replacement.
We currently run a Server 2003 and XP Pro workstations. Plus a Linux server which gives us the Espresso service.
We are a 240 pupil primary school with 9 classes – each classroom has an IWB which is run from a HP notebook which the teacher is able to remove for PPA / Home use.
Our main ICT is delivered in an air conditioned, dedicated suite which has 33 workstations.
The workstations (Fujitsu Siemens Esprimos)and HP notebooks are under warranty till June 2012.
We have a lone vanilla server Dell PET300 (tower) running MS Server 2003 R2 (SP2) – this is out of warranty in May 2011.
Mindful of certain budgetary constraints I think all kit is going to need to have an extended life out of warranty but any suggestions on what would be an ideal way forward would be really welcome. My thinking would we need to be thinking of a new server next summer for starters and having the T300 running some roles for it. The existing kit is covered by a decent APC unit and lives in the corner of the ICT Suite, the switches are in a ceiling mounted half cabinet which BT have conveniently (for them) placed the broadband incoming sockets below. In a redesign though a full cabinet might be the answer with all the kit in there.
