If it's completely unreadable I'd use a usb sata dock, a freezer and two sealable plastic bags.
1) Place hard drive inside first bag with (optional) dessicant (dried rice would work), seal.
2) Place bagged hard drive into second bag, seal.
3) Leave in freezer for an hour or two.
4) Have usb sata dock ready and connected to another computer.
5) Whip drive out of freezer, remove bags, dunk into sata dock, power on dock.
6) Copy data quickly.
Repeat 1-6 as necessary - there's a time limit on how long you can copy data before it realises it's broken again.
