2.5" sata laptop drive

Sorry may be dumb question, but I've had tough day and ever since I've decided to walk home from work to keep fit it's snowed practically every day!

Failed toshiba laptop and tearful teacher that hasn't backed up for weeks:(

It's not booting and has the same symptoms as a failed desktop psu. I've taken the hard drive out and as it's a sata drive can I just connect it to a desktop as a slave or do I need a 2.5" to 3.5" adaptor like an IDE drive would need?:o


I've swopped power supplies from another toshiba laptop but it's not that that's failed, it wouldn't boot from a cd, it starts then turns off after a minute so thinking maybe the CPU.

Yes SATA 2.5" and SATA 3.5" drives use the same data and power cables.

they defo run on the same power ie voltage / wattage / amps or w/e ??

I connected a laptop sata drive to a desktop sata data cable and power cable and it worked fine for me once but never had to do it again but yeah I would agree.

I've done it many times, no problems. If it was a 2.5" IDE then you would definitely need an adapter as it's smaller than 3.5" IDE.

They use the same power cables, and same voltage (AFAIK) but a desktop drive will pull more current. Some laptop power systems might not be able to provide it, and it would definitely drain the battery faster.

Be OK if laptop sata is connected to desktop though won't it?
