Hi
I am looking at getting a Dell Desktop. the only problem is memory is pretty expensive for them so the idea is upgrade that myself. I have been told i have to use Dell branded memory or it wouldn't work. Can anyone confirm this?
I have recently upgraded 2 Dell Poweredge T105 with 8GB ram in each without any problems.

Its not that other branded memory wont work fella , but I'm sure with some Dells you can invalidate your warranty by using non recomended memory modules,
not if you don't tell them, and remove it if they do a warranty call...
dell desktops come with 2+GB ram as standard now don't they?
we never buy memory from Dell

Having been a Dell service engineer, I can say that the majority of people who're actually in the field couldn't care less.
The whole thing about having to use Dell branded memory is a mixture of marketing and brand paranoia. Other memory'll work just fine, depending on its quality.
In the past we have bought DELL systems and added memory from Crucial, who guarantee it will work. I have never had a problem. We did once have an issue with a Crucial memory upgrade for a Toshiba laptop, Crucial refunded our money without question when it did not work.
DELL systems are nothing special as far as memory is concerned. We have just (last week) upgraded 24x DELL Optiplex 260s with 2x 1gb sticks of Crucial memory, replacing the 2x 256mb DELL they previously had. They work fine.
Damn, seriously? Where did you get the RAM from, and exactly what did you buy? Stuff I bought from Crucial didn't work in our T105's, although it came in handy for replacing a couple of duff sticks of RAM in some workstations.Quote:

Try the crucial web site. I have used it in the past to buy RAM for Dell computers. It is compatiable and cheaper than buying elsewhere.

I always get what the kingston website tells me. If the machine has a failure because of ram, I RMA the ram to kingston, any dell issue that might make them think it's my ram, I remove it, then slap back in the dell. Sorted.
