One of our students a few weeks back brought me her usb stick, it wouldn't let her save anything on it. Strange, so copied all her work off and reformatted the thing. Worked for a few hours then broke again.
Told her must be a dodgy stick and to get a replacement. Well today she turns up with a new one which has exactly the same problem.
I've checked and got others to check there is no switch on it so it's not that. Any one with any ideas?
It's a transcend 16Gb one.
Stupid thought - mobile phones don't have any adverse effect do they? Usb sticks and mobile phones in a handbag. (unless of course I'm being dense and you're joking about females and dodgy sticks) in which case:getmecoat:
How weird is that, I had exactly the same problem with a memory stick yesterday. It's only 1GB, but I copied all data from it, formatted it and it worked for a few hours. You can copy, read and delete data from it, but cannot create new data on it. It's formatted in FAT32 so I know it's not permissions related.
I've not had this with anyone else apart from this one girl. Nothing i try seems to fix it for long.
I had wondered about the phone issue but i wasn't sure if it would cause this.
I have to confess the memory stick given to me is from a female teacher also :p
My phone and memory stick usually go in the handy little pocket in my handbag together when I take a memory stick anywhere, having said that I've not had a problem with my memory stick, although I don't use my memory stick now I've got a school laptop.
Might just be they are not stopping the stick properly and just yanking it out the computer when they've finished.
I have locked this till one of the other admins can deal with it.

As for just yanking it out of the machine! :P i always do that but have never had that happen to me.. well have never had anything happen to my mem sticks through yanking it out of a machine ..
Maybe it is something that you females tend to have, that is doing something to the sticks? come on IT Girls what do you have where you mem stick goes :)

I was going to explain how I deal with USB sticks when removing them from PCs but I think it might get me into trouble: suffice it to say that I don't, er, take much care...:embarassed:
I either wear my stick around my neck or it is in the middle section of my handbag - never had any read only issues with it or any other one I have owned.
Oh, and I am definitely female (otherwise I'd be called Warlock or somesuch, wouldn't I?)
We have had exactly the same problem here, 1 teacher has a memory stick that they have been using fine for the last 6 months, then it has just become read only - but only on the top level, you can access and change anything inside the folders, but not those straight inside the memory stick.
And yes, it is owned by a woman :p
