Monitors Attacked By Magnets
Is there anything that can be done to rescue a CRT monitor which has had a magnet dragged over it ?
I have 3 at the moment which all have purple patches and would obviously hurt anyones eyes if they looked at it long enough. I've tried leaving them unplugged for a month but that hasn't made any difference.

Re: Monitors Attacked By Magnets
I have to do this several times a night at home! My cats have magnets on their collars to open the catflap for them and them are very fond of brushing past my monitor :x
Re: Monitors Attacked By Magnets
I tried degaussing the monitors before leaving them without power. The degaussing had no effect at all.
Re: Monitors Attacked By Magnets
Looks like they are permanently damaged then :(
Re: Monitors Attacked By Magnets
They can be repaired, at a cost.. and it would be much more economical to a) buy new monitors and b) serverely punish the people responsible and issue them with the cost of a new monitor.
Re: Monitors Attacked By Magnets
I replace our monitors with £15-£20 second user 17" CRTs from a company nearby. They have a load of nice black dell ones in at moment.
Re: Monitors Attacked By Magnets
We threw one out last week for this and invoiced them £250. Probably mates of the lad we threw out!
Re: Monitors Attacked By Magnets
We are trying to move away from CRT's here. But we still have the worry of theif of the TFT screens.
Re: Monitors Attacked By Magnets
pfy says that taking a strong enough magnet (hard disk) and waving it an inch or so above surface of screen can "un-bruise" the monitor sometimes.
Of course, not liability accepted for this advice breaking stuff. Don't try this until you've used all other options.
Re: Monitors Attacked By Magnets
We have kids turnig around the towers so that they face the edge of the monitors - which has a nice psychadelic effect - need to make sure the source of disturbance is removed as well of course - i'm saying - before degaussing.
Re: Monitors Attacked By Magnets
I'm sure you can get "degauss guns"..have a word with your local TV shop...I always find our CRTs do it if stored upside down or on their sides.
Re: Monitors Attacked By Magnets
Yeah, but give them a few days of sitting on there bottom and they are fine again (says he who has about 40 CRTs upside down so they dont fall over..... And you can get a Degaussing Wand, CPC sell them
