Need Some Help Choosing A NAS Device

Looking to increase the storage space on the network. I want something I can plug into the network and use. Have been looking at NAS devices but not sure what to go for. Have been stung in the past and don't want it to happen again.

I want something that I create folders and share as you normally would on an AD Domain. But most NAS devices I have looked at have some form of OS which looks after users / access etc.

Would I be better off just getting a USB based device and plugging it into the server, or is their a NAS device that will do what I need?

We use quite a few Buffalo nas's which back up to a connecting USB External.

I would thoroughly recommend these.

Understatement ;-)

Built one with two 500 gig drives in a JBOD giving me 1TB for our media server.
This backs up to another box with again two 500gig drives in using Rsync.
Also got another for my Ghost images - [ need to get a gigabit card for it - its only working at 100meg full duplex at the moment ]
Also have another for my..... 'personal jukebox' and another for FTPing data in and out of the school.
The OS for them is excellent - I have them all reporting back to a box running kiwi syslog.

I would go as far and state that I think freenas - [ based on freebsd ] is better than other NAS related products you fork out for. Of course that is my personal opinion !!

I can tell you don't bother getting one of those Western Digital MyBook World things or whatever, we have one and it has a tendancy of dropping offline... which is no good!

The only good thing about it was the price...

prolly work better with USB :P

Just built a 1Tb box here with it (2x20g Raid1 system + 4x320Gb Raid5 data drive). :)
