Also i didn't mention it earlier but get the R510 with the 6 core, 12 thread processors if you want to cluster in the future.
We use a remote app as our primary SIMS for all users in school and out. You do need Office installed on the TS server(s). We had a few issues with NT6 but apart from that everything works fine including Discover and FMS.

We have two servers load balanced for general use (VMs) and a couple more for web apps and gateway (VMs).

A heads up on an issue with TS and SIMS reports that took a while to track down:

If when running a report for the second and subsequent times (the first one works) gives the error 'Error: Object reference not set to an instance of an object' it's related to MS Hotfix 2553912.

    Good luck.

I agree, the few that run reports here would need to use the full remote desktop...we make both available in the RDweb page...the one bonus we have here with staff, with the Remote access they can access both network drives and local machine drives in the remote sessions, although teaching staff how to copy and paste is another issue then

We've had a TS for SIMS access only for almost 3 years now and we have never had more than 6 people use it at the same time - from a staff of well over 100. We worked on the same 20-30 user baseline when assessing specs, but it's never got anywhere near.

We run ours on windows server with up to 20 concurrent users. It uses less than 3gb of ram using Terminal Services.

We have it on a virtual box and it runs fine.

There is no need for dedicated hardware really.
