I've just tried to buy a TS-859u-RP+ 16tb, but aparently its EOL... aparently the replacement is an 879, and cost 1/3 more.

    I have been offered a 24tb TS-879U-RP for around £450 less than a 24tb TS-1279U-RP.....

If using it for a DPM storage pool would you run RAID 5 or 6 though?

    RAID 5 7x3=21tb vs 11x2 = 22tb
    RAID 6 6x3=18tb vs 10x2 = 20tb

    1. Depends how mission critical the data was that was going to be stored on said device?
    2. Will backups be made of said data on said device to tape or some other storage medium ?
    3. How many drives you were using in said device, if quite a lot then raid 6 ( thus 2 disk redundancy ) but if you were doing backups and weren't concerned about losing data or re building the raid then raid 5 ??

Not done much with raid but for the sake of a couple of Tb's surely RAID 6 would be worth it, that way if 2 drives went at once you would still be ok.

The device is intended to backup a production SAN using DPM.

There will also be a DR copy of the source SAN data, either by replicating the NAS, or via a 2nd DPM server to another NAS, or offloading to tape depending upon funds/finding a home for a replica NAS.

The 879U will be maxed out with 8 drives, the 1279U will be maxed out with 12 drives.

My instincts agree with mac_shinobi & say go for the 12-drive device & run RAID 6.....

Regarding the hard drives for the RAID array, you may want to consider getting Western Digital's new Red drives since they are specifically designed for NASs and 24/7 operation (unlike most of their other drives). StorageReview have a review of the 3TB model here.
