    Scanner that will work out of box with Windows 7

    We have some lovely small Cannon scanners (Lide 25) that work fine with W7 but we have to first install the drivers and toolbox and plug the scanner in as an admin user before it will work as a student. Anyone know of a scanner that will work as a restricted user?

    While not a direct solution to your problem we use a networked scanner from HP here - just uploads the files to a place on our student/staff shared drive and then once a week a script deletes out the contents to keep things clean and tidy.

    They don't come cheap though!

    I've just bought a Canon LiDE 210, similar to the device mentioned in the original post, and I've found the provided scanning software is easy enough to automate with AutoIt. I've simply made an AutoIt script that watches out for the scanning software's window to appear, then just saves the file to a folder somewhere and quits the software again. This is on my home Windows 7 desktop PC, but you could set up a spare Windows 7 (or Windows XP) workstation just to run the scanner.

    Would adding the ClassGUID for cameras and scanners to the "Allow non-administrators users to install drivers for these device classes" GPO be worth doing?

    Code:
    {6BDD1FC6-810F-11D0-BEC7-08002BE2092F}

    I haven't tried this myself yet, but PnPUtil can be used to automate the installation of drivers. i.e.

    Code:
    pnputil.exe -i -a C:\Drivers\Canon\LiDE_210\CNQ4809.inf
    or

    Code:
    forfiles /p C:\Drivers /s /m *.inf /c "cmd /c pnputil -a @path"

    Nice ideas guys, thank you.

    We already have a large copier that scans to network but some times its easier for the students just go and scan it themselves there and then.
