Whats wrong with a notepad and pen with a digital camera ? Seems a bit of an overkill to have a PDA for a field trip...
Plus outside in the sunlight you can see the screen properly..

Think key is soon lots primary school children will be using pda's in form of smartphones so we should try and embrace the use and look at ways of using in educational setting.
