I have a Win XP Pro SP2 workstation that’s developed an unusual condition that so far I have been unable to resolve at present. As admin everything is fine but I have had a couple of students using the machine today and both were unable to access the normal sound volume adjustment tool of the toolbar also both didn’t have sound. Any ideas please folks?

Is there a third party mixer installed, like soundMAX or equivalent? Maybe that is disabled in startup?

maybe you need to give permissions to the students security group or everyone for sndvol32 or if there is a 3rd party mixer installed as per ben stantons suggestion give them permission to use that as well as making sure it starts up, by right clicking on the exe and going to the security tab.
The security tab will only be visible if you have disabled simple file sharing ( just in case you didnt know )
This can be disabled by going to my computer --> tools --> folder options -->then click on the view tab and scroll all the way to the bottom and un check the simple file sharing

No third party mixer present. Just a bog standard build Dell optiplex GX 60, it has been working fine - then just this week students sound has dropped off. I'm reasonably sure the computer is free of viruses and malware.

Some of my schools still have Windows 98 machines in service, so Windows Me is positively modern :P

Yup still have a few windows 95 PCs here! In their defence they do run perfectly - as nobody is stupid enough to touch them
I think the image for them including Office 97 is less than 200Mb
