    Hi there

    I am wanting a laptop charger for a Dell laptop.

    Are compatible chargers as good as 'real thing'?

    I've bought compatibles, and they seem OK. Make sure the charger is regulated - this means that if the current drawn by the laptop varies, the voltage does not change. Most are, by the way, but you should check nonetheless.

    In my experience, "it depends". Had a bunch from Rolta to replace some HP chargers and none have failed - unlike the OEM chargers, most of which have failed. On the other hand, have had cheapies from eBay/Amazon that have literally melted. You tend to get what you pay for to some extent.

    Apparently there are a lot of sub-standard (possibly dangerous) cheap imports out there, so you need to be careful.
