That's a few years old now - if I remember correctly, Johnny Lee was hired by Microsoft to work on the XBox 360's Kinect, and was one of the main reasons why the Kinect got a Linux driver and a public API (I think he now works for Google). I think someone had actually set up selling infrared pens for use with a WiiMote whiteboard. The new "interactive" projectors use the same system, just neatly packaged - infrared emitting devices that are tracked by cameras built in to the projector. If you want to try something interesting, get a Kinect and download the Windows API and see if you can make a gesture-driven IWB.
