My current laptop is a HP nc8000 (Pentium-M with 512MB RAM and ATI graphics). I must admit that it is a bit of a brick an is only really a stop gap until I get something slimmer.

The machine was purchased second hand from 1st Tech for a couple of hundred quid and is perfectly adequate for most things... although more RAM would allow for VMs, etc.

I currently run Debian on the laptop.

Dual core Sony Vaio SZ2 here... but I had to buy it myself. Replaces my desktop for most things too.

Vista Capable the sticker says and the specs suggest... Haven't tried yet and can't run the vista tool.

I have a nice little MacBook with extra RAM ... parallels for testing Windows stuff and it runs a number of extra things happily too (WoW, Football Manager 2007, etc)

I have a 300MHz P2 Dell with 64mb of RAM running a very cut down version of XP. Runs faster than my 1GHz Mini-ITX based laptop and its brilliant for programming switches as the COM port just works, unlike a lot of newer ones which either dont have them or refuse for work correctly.

None - non-teaching staff arent allowed to be issued that kind of thing here.
Only when we had a managment change were we allowed to upgrade our desktops (2 for 5 people at one point) from AMD K6's

Don't have a work one as I hate using laptops for long periods - its my big hands and those small keyboards.

I do own a laptop, but it only goes on my travels.

I dont have my own, but use one of the pool ones when needed or my own personal one. I have a HP ZD7000, very nice laptop, wifi, 80gb hard drive, 2gb ram, runs Vista without aero as it doesnt like my FX5200 VGA card in it, trial install of vista found it and it worked, final install of real vista and it doesnt! Grrrr, never mind

My work laptop is a hp nc6320 - 100g sata, 1gb ram. Assuming vista will run on it. We've several reasonably good desktops littered about too.

    I have an Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo Pro V2085 (Intel Pentium M 1.7Ghz, 512Mb RAM, 80GB HDD, DVD-RW) - I really don't like it but it isn't my main machine now

I mainly use an Intel iMac core 2 duo (2Ghz, 1GB Ram, 160GB HDD, DL Superdrive, 17", ATI Radeon X1600). I was going to use Parallels on it but have found no need to - I don't use windows software enough to require it, and with my implementing a 2X application server soon the couple of occasional apps will be dealt with.

And then, for any testing bits and pieces I make use of our old servers that sit around.

MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo 2.16GHz with 3GB RAM and running a few Parallels VMs for testing and running alongside the school network: a server 2003 R2 VM for training (just finished one MCP now on the other) and two XP VMs- a client for the test VM and one to actually log on to our admin network so I can test Sleuth and SIMS updates etc. The school bought the MBP.

We are also probably getting an iMac in our office at some point this year for training our two new technicians on Mac bits and for management of the XServe and XServe RAID. I also just manage the Windows servers from the MBP too using RDP. Works really well.

re: What laptop do you use at work?

My work laptop is a Dell 610d, 1.6ghz mobile pentium, 512mb ram, not sure on graphics and HDD, can't remember! My work PC is also pretty new, 2.8GHz pentium 4, 1GB ram and a massive hdd which is really handy.

All of us, even our junior technician, have our own PC and laptop. It really helps us do our jobs more effectively, as we can load all the network diagnostic and management tools onto the laptops and work from anywhere we need to. That's a serious advantage as our site is pretty huge!

re: What laptop do you use at work?

Yeah, I second maniac's thoughts on the usefulness of a laptop for a technician. The ability to just wander to a problem point and connect/check some things is invaluable and will reduce overall diagnostic times, thus fixing things faster.

Most work can be done on a desktop but those times when I'm out and about I couldn't manage without the laptop.

Derer1 - it sounds like your SMT need to wake up and realise we aren't living in the 90's any more - especially in a school the size of yours!

We use an Acer Travelmate 290 and a Toshiba Satellite A10. The Acer isn't the lightest of notebooks and only has 256MB RAM but it does the job. WinXP and built-in wifi, and it gets used for portable projector setups as well. The A10 gets re-built a lot and loaned out temporarily so it's not always available. Plus it doesn't have wifi so it's not that great.
