hello all, sorry to ask what is most likely a daft question.
i've just put a new mobo in a machine, and didn't put in a new power supply. now the machine randomly freezes and takes a while to boot (boot itself is fine, its the build up to boot) .
power supply is 200w, how likely is this to be the problem?

That depends on that hardware that you put in there.

What spec was the old mobo and what spec is the new one, is the rest of the hardware the same? CPU Ram etc?
Is the new board a different chipset? Have you re installed windows?

Considering how power hungry the netburst celeries are, I'd say there's a good change that a 200w PSU is inadequate for your needs. Do you have a bigger one to try?

i dont, hence why i'm looking for a more knowledge person than myself to validate my idea before i buy one!.

How old was your other motherboard?
I'm only thinking, does your existing power supply have the additional 4 pin P4 power connector? That might cause problems if not.

Power may become an issue with those bits it depends on how many HDD, optical drives & additional hardware you have. Was your old mainboard SIS chipset as well? I would certainly try a fresh install of windows to start with if you have done one already.

I agree, power seems to be the problem here.

Power is almost certainly not the problem.
Run memtest86 to check out the memory and the 'PC Health Stats' in the BIOS to see the the CPU is overheating...
The problem is not the PSU!

Power fluctuations in the motherboard will cause memory errors.Running memtest86 on it's own on the PC is not diagnostic in this case.
Check the memory in another PC that's known to work if you wish to rule out bad ram as the cause.

I agree but he has also installed additional RAM so has an untested RAM slot and DIMM - not to mention that the two may be incompatible with each other and/or the board.
Having worked in technical support for the supplier of this board I know that 9/10 it's the memory not a perphaps slighty faulty PSU. A machine hanging is a characteristic of overheating and as Novatech send goods with UPS or DHL the hsf being slightly loose is also a possibility(strike: certainty
).

My most recent problem PC's have had high powered graphic cards in them. So perhaps my recent experiences are biased.

That article doesn't mention graphics - is it onboard or do you have something plugged in.

Re: new mobo freezes
Sorry to post on your thread but i thought i may have similar problem. We had 20 new PCs from novatech which also randomly freeze. After few months of tech support which included sending PC back to Novatech for testing on which they didnt find any faults. Novatech claim its our build which is faulty. but we have over 200 PC's which have same build the problem is only with these 20 (which are highest spec PCs on site). I look right idiot in front of other staff for not being able to sort the problem out on the novatech PCs. Any help will be much appreciated. spec is
P4 HT 3Ghz
512 PC 4200 RAM
Foxcon mother board
80 gig samsung SATA HDD
