Question R710 Boot ESXi from SD card module or Internal USB?

    Hi All,

Quick question. We have just purchased a couple of Dell r710s and discovered they do not come with the internal SD card slots as standard and this is an add on module. There is however an internal USB port that we could use.

We are looking to run esxi on these boxes with esxi running on the removable storage and the VMs running from a SAN.

Are there any advantages/disadvantages of using the internal USB slot instead of the SD card. Anyone any experiences?

    Thanks in advance

I've used the USB slot on an HP DL385 G5p, works nicely - just made sure it was a quality stick and plenty big enough.

I'm in exactly the same situation as you and I bought ours with the internal SD card module and 1GB SD cards. The contractor we're working with advised this would be the best option and said he's used it successfully several times. I'll be booting the servers up for the first time next week.

Go for it, just buy some decent sticks as already posted. Should only read from them on boot anyway, so not like they are gonna be hammered (unless you reboot 300 times a day!)
