Dabs have HP ones for around £650...

True, the 47U's do make a strange price difference, but it really isn't justifyable is it?Originally Posted by Ric_

I've used a few other cabinets in the past, and find that some aren't really 1m deep (I have some rack components that are 1m from front to back). My old prism cabinet ended up with bent rails from the old apc mounts (no rails). The hp ones are very tough. I have a similary priced Dell rack too, although that was part of an order.Originally Posted by john
The first one I had is actually branded as Compaq, and came with new compaq servers - I liked it so much I got a second.
The price difference to a prism is only around £200. Can they hold 900Kg?
Ah, thats only 800mm deep, no good for meOriginally Posted by john

I went with Cooper B-Line Access cabinets

although as they came pre-assembled on pallets I too had to dismantle them to get them up a flight of stairs to the server room.
Does it matter what width the cabinet is?
Are there any benefits to having an 800mm one over a 600m?
Try Comms-Express
You can fit deeper servers in them. This is only really an issue with the big 1u/2u slimline servers though.Originally Posted by Midget
Alternatively it gives you more room for power distribution and cabling.
how does the width effect how deep a server can be?
Theres 3 measurements to consider width, depth and height.Originally Posted by Midget
I thought the width was standard, otherwise stuff wouldnt fit, and it was only the depth that changes.......
Obviously any panelling doors etc would change width slightly but surely the internals have to be the same.
The width is a standard 19 inches (482.6mm).
The height depends on the number of 'u's. 1u is 1.75 inches (44.45). There are several 'standard' sizes of rack height ranging from 8u all the way up to 47u.
There is no set standard on rack depth but 400mm, 600mm and 800mm are common. Extra space is usually factored in for power distribution and general cabling.
I know, which is why I'm looking at 42u height, 1000mm depth, however I have the choice of 600mm wide and 800mm wide, is there any reason what so ever why I should consider the extra for the wide cabinet
the millimeter measurements are external btw
As my father once said to me about being married: -
"You'll always be in the sh*t, its just the depth that varies"

Wider cabs have cable management systems down the front/side of the cab. Mainly needed if your using it for telephony or networking infrastructure.
If you've just got a rack full of servers, I wouldn't bother with the cable management.
