    ADSL Problems

    Ho Hum.

So my ADSL connection decided to play up on Sunday night. Connection lost, trying to reconnect, failing to sync etc..

I noticed that my phone line is quite noisy now and in the background I can hear what sounds like a modem dialling up in the background. This happens whenever I answer a call or send one. The line is noisy then all of a sudden is clean again.

When I look at the smoothwall log it usually shows a drop in connection. Problem is that it seems to be getting worse.

Had the engineer out yesterday who could hear the stuff on the line but needed me to put the original ADSL piece of crap back on to see if its a problem with my internal ADSL card.

Someone at smoothwall told me that the card I am using (BeWan) does have a problem with noisy lines. Never had a problem before though.

Annnnnnnnnnnnnddddd, just to make things worse I can't find the adapter for the piece of cr@p external ADSL thingy so I am a little stuck.

Anyone else had problems with noisy lines? We only run 1Mb as thats all it can take but my ISP do seem reluctant to contact BT about it.

    Hope this sends.

    Re: ADSL Problems

Is the noise only when the ADSL is connected to the line? If so it could be one or more of the microfilters.

Thanks for the offer, I think I will bring mine in from home to test it tommorow. I don't think it is anything to do with it but you never know.

The engineer replaced the Microfilter yesterday so I hope its not that.

I've actually left my phone off the hook now and it seems to be holding its connection.

The Bewan doesn't like noise as much as some - if you think it could be the bewan being knackered, we have a couple in the Leeds office, and I can swap one out for you, but it does sound like a noisy line.

Unfortunately, getting BT to admit fault is like getting tequila out of a cactus... you have to beat the b*stard, but it has spikes

    Re: ADSL Problems

This should be in the FFS section.

Left my phone off the hook all last night and the ADSL didn't drop a beat.

Put the phone back on and all was well for an hour then it dropped its connection twice but picked it back up almost immediately. Been okay ever since.

No idea what caused it but I imagine its someone messing around in the exchange. (hate it when teachers ask if you've been messing with the internet).

Good news is I p!ssed my partner off by borrowing our ADSL router from home and she's not in work today.

    Can't wait to get home.

Almost certainly a bad filter then.

Replace them all and double check you have on on *every* device conncected to the line (usual culprits are sky boxes or alarms).

Cheap filters can sometimes cause problems too; so try a different brand.

Or just get BT to fit a filtered master faceplate then you don't need any other filters.

    Re: ADSL Problems

I don't think it was the filter (bt masterplate) as it was changed around 12 oclock yesterday and I was still having problems with the internet till the morning.

Only other thing on the line is my phone.

    Yep.

Went out and bought a new one when I replaced the ADSL cable.

Seems okay today, theres still some noise on the line but the tones I heard aren't there anymore.

Slightly off topic, but you should also check the wiring in your sockets, you will get a better ADSL connection if you disconnect the No 3 wire (Normally Orange/White). This was used for some older phones to generate the ring signal for an incoming call... not needed normally now.

I'd hope the problem was fixed, it was 14 months ago
