    SmartBoard Loose Connection

    Hi

Please can someone help. I have a problem with some of my smartboards loosing connection at random intervals. I have a quick solution but has anyone else seen this or found a solution.

It appears to happen with different makes and models of boards and ages.
It happens with different makes and modals of pc's

The common factor is the notebook software.

    I have tried the following
I have updated the driver to the latest.
I have reinstalled the notebook software.
I have tried the latest version of the software.
I have tried different machines in with a board that has done it.
I have moved a machine round.
I have ghosted a machine from scratch.
I have installed a machine from scratch.
I have in the past had nic cards turn the power off under power saving but I cannot find this option under the driver.

    Has anyone got any ideas.

Presume you are using USB leads and not serial connections from PC to Board. Are the USB leads less than 2 meters long?

They are usb and have extenders on. Most of them have been like this for ages and have not been a problem its recently things are going strange like some power management bit is kicking in.

I have this problem as well... The board has been working fine since installation 6-7 months ago and now (since a new teacher has started using the room) it keeps loosing connection to the PC. I also have an extender on - like most of the boards in the college - and generally they work fine. Really weird and Smart are no help.

If anyone has any thoughts or a solution, I would probably do a little happy dance for them...

I'm sure its because you are using extenders on the smart board to pc. USB loses its signal strength its 3 - 5 Meters.

You can get a USB hub to extend the length of distance between pc and smartboard without exceeding the cable specs.

The extender is also a booster (in the same way as a hub would boost the signal) and the other 50-odd boards about the place are working fine so I don't think it's that. We did spot that this PC is the only one that has a usb mouse and memory stick permanently plugged in. Have put a PS/2 mouse on and unplugged the memory stick. So far this seems to have solved the problem...

Have you tried a different cable though? People damage cables all the time and it would mean the only thing that is broke is the SMARTboard.

We've had a couple of USB leads go faulty and there's a hidden issue when replacing them. The fault causes the computer to set the device up as a standard usb-serial convertor. You have to delete this in device manager and then reconnect the new lead and it then sets itself as a Smart device.

It might be worth checking device manager and ensuring you have the Smart device and not the generic one.
