    Best way forward.

I currently have the following servers doing the specified roles:

WAMP HP ML Server – Wireless management server, No warranty

Eserver01 Dell Poweredge SC420 – Online exams testing server

Pserver01 Dell Poweredge 840 - Print server, In warranty

Server Elonex Server – Finance and Successmaker server, No warranty

Server02 Eleonex Resilience – Application installation files, odd numbered intake year home folders for students, Antivirus management, Star Accounts, Wireless authentication, Active Directory Domain Controller and DNS, this server is not covered by a warranty so any hardware failure would be troublesome

Server03 Dell Poweredge 2900 – Staff homes folders, even numbered intake year home folders for students, Active Directory Domain Controller, DHCP and DNS, School Helpdesk, this server is covered by a next business day warranty.

Vserver01 Dell Poweredge 840 - In warranty currently running esxi 3.5

I am proposing to install a new Dell PE as Server04 running 2008 R2 64Bit, I am also considering using the 2 poweredge 840's with some extra ram in them and connected to their own nas/san device and running Xen Server to virtualise the current print server, server and server02 roles and making sure these 2 servers are kept under warranty.

This will allow me to retire the servers which currently have no warranties but to have the services of those still available until no longer needed.

    Thoughts welcomed.

    Ben

I'd be tempted to virtualise the exam server and repurpose the hardware as well. Ours are virtual (one vm per exam software) and I couldn't justify dedicated hardware for something that's used 1 month in 12. Yours may see more use.

Good catch that was my plan as well just forgot to include that.

I believe Xen Server free version can only havre up to 4gb ram to use so both of those poweredges will be upgraded to the maximum for that.

The exam server hardware may then become my workstation.

I have two XenServer 5.5 free installs with 32GB of ram addressable and another with 8GB.
