An Edge switch would typically be used to connect servers/network storage and Core switches to connect switches together. To be honest however in most school networks or small businesses it would be OK to connect servers into the Core switch.
48 port PoE switches do exist, but you're talking a lot of money. Unless you really need the high density, look at 2 x 24 port PoE switches.

Ah that explains why all the servers were on the now defunct switch. So it must be an edge switch however, I don't need 48 ports for servers, storage etc, I do need 48 ports for other devices as the 24 port ones I have are full. Mm more thinking time required.
Things are becoming clearer, thanks for your patience.

Buy high density if you require it, but if you have a 42u cabinet which is half full, there's no need to buy a 48 port switch. I can find managing and installing 2 x 24 switches much easier than a single 48 port.
