    Question Intel Pentium 4

    Hello all,

I'm looking to upgrade some processors currently using an Intel D845GVSR motherboard. It says on Intel's website that depending on the motherboard revision it can support upto a 2.8GHz P4 with 1MB L2 cache.

Inevitably there are also a few revisions of the 2.8A CPU but there's also a 2.8E CPU. Is there any reason in theory why the 2.8E shouldn't work?

The 2.8A CPU requires 1.25v to 1.4v whereas the 2.8E CPU requires 1.28v to 1.4v, so in theory it shouldn't/wouldn't kill the processor. I can't see any other limitation unless someone can point out otherwise, many thanks!

The entire P4 family was nortorious for it's newer versions being incompatable with the same socket but older motherboards. My advice when it comes to P4s is to only put in what Intel tell you you can. Otherwise things could get expensive!

Normally I would agree with your thinking completely, but if you look at the specs they are identical. Generally speaking it's the voltage and/or the manufacturing technology being different which creates the problem. You're right though, best stick to what is recommended!
