The only thing to watch out for with Pre Paid sim cards is that there is a new South African law called the Rica Act. Basically you have to register your pre paid sim when purchasing. I don't know how it applies to visitors to the country though.
I had a quick look at Rica and it seemed to say it was just for citizens but I'll check a bit deeper.
