    Server-room-in-a-box first look

    Well, here it is. It contains:

    Gator 8U Traveller case
    Server: X-Case 2U low depth chassis, Core 2 E8400, 6 GB RAM, 2x1TB (mirrored) Samsung F3 drives
    Linksys 16 port 10/100 switch
    Ruckus Zone Director 1000 (Thanks Net-Ctrl)
    Smoothwall UTM (Not shown due to the mounting brackets not yet arriving-Kindly donated by SmoothWall)
    Keysonic Wireless KB with built in touchpad
    14" Lightwieght monitor to be mounted inside on of the lids via magnets or velcro (not decided which yet)
    6 Port rack mount power supply

    Total cost to date = £600 approx

    It means that our set-up time at BETT will be greatly reduced and we can set up and EduGeek wireless hotspot for our members as well
    Oh, and not shown is the IP camera that we shall be using on the stand for the week to stream pictures etc.

    I think VMware set-up with sun kit would be good!!

    Good for heads to see what is the normal cutting edge.

    The problem is you need a rack mount server which is less than 50 cm in depth. We shall be runnign VMWare Virtual Server on there and powering a few thin clients off it, but as a proof of concept and as a way of showing non-technical staff what components a network should contain it does pretty well. It also means we don't have devices and cables trailing all over our stand. Some years it looks like we have had an explosion in a spaghetti factory!

    You what one of these cases LinITX.com - Travla C146 1U Mini-ITX Rackmount Case

    What about getting some life size print of rack for the back wall of the stand make it look like a server room!!!
