    Fibre Swich replacement

    Morning,

I've got a fibre switch which I think is failing and need to replace it. Its the main switch in server cabinet which has 5 fibre ports running into it from around the school.

Can anyone recommend a nice one, I like netgear stuff so I need a blue one but I can't find one which has more than 4 gbic modules on it. They are SC connectors if that helps.

What sort of money do you have and what space Units left in cab and depth of cab?

    How about purple?

The existing unit is 1u but its a big cab with loads of room if I move stuff around.

Not much money to spend. May be able to get £750.

    Purple is good.

I would have recommended a chassis unit but even the cheaper ones are gonna be a little too costly for 750. If you had more I'd say Extreem Networks just because of the purple lol actually they are a very good switch manufacturer but I think the price would be a bit too steep.

I'll see what I can find!

    What have you got currently?

The cheapest decent chassis I could find was £500 with nothing but blanking plates and a power supply the 4 port modules were around £500 a piece HP procurve 4204VL

Mmmm. The switch says its an etherman xpresso 3224a which I can't seem to find any documentation for.

I inherited it so I've no idea where it was purchased from.

Judging from the spec sheet looks like its running 100FX on the six ports if thats the case and you are happy enough to stick with this the replacement wouldn't be so expensive as I thought!

Thats what most people say until they get a new switch that is really deep like a procurve and they end up getting a new cabinet :P like me :?

Mines a floor staging full height one with a rack server in it. I did have to push it quite hard as the rack is twisted a little but it went in, shame I can't fit the front panel on it.
