I am in a similar position but have a vague agreement for a new server. I have been quoted for an
HP ML350 Future Proofed Server - Xeon E5420 (2500/1333-2x6MB) Quad Core Processor, 2GB Ram, 4 x 250GB Hard Drives (Raid 5 With Spare) at 1700 - is this good, not good, or what?

I am intending to go up to Server 2008 as well, and use the old server for something - but I am not sure quite what yet (and not a lot of ideas as to how to do it anyway).

My argument with the boss for a new server was: a) the warranty issue, b) the fact that it is nearly full and the situation will get worse as more and more 'big' things are being stored on it,(we are getting into podcasting, vles etc) c) future proofing d) the noise it makes shows that things are beginning to fail!
    e) we run more and more applications off the server and they get slower and slower due to lack of memory

You have been wise in asking the question on here. I was in a similar situation about 18 months ago and found I spent the best part of a year trying to research the way forward - lot of very useful input from EduGeekers took me to a point where I felt capable of seeking quotes. We ended up with a Dell and bought in a day of expertiese from a Capita server installer. Glad I did that as the migration from Server 2000 to Server 2003 didn't go smothly (still have a problem with folder redirection). I learnt a load whatching how the Capita chap set us up and also researching what kit to get but still have a heap to learn
