We got 5 Canon PowerShot A470s with Tesco vouchers last year. They work a treat and seem to be able to handle general school use. They take standard rechargable AA batteries and SD memory cards. Still images are fine and the video footage they produce can be edited straight in Windows Movie Maker. I'd have gone for the A570 myself, just because it has a higher frame rate for video recording, and I think there's a new model out (A480?) for this year, but otherwise we're very happy with them. Around £60 each if you search a bit.

I'd also recommend the Canon. Or maybe the Panasonic.

Canon Powershots are great value and take pretty good pictures.
