    Beeping UPS!

No, i'm not swearing, it really is beeping.

I posted a while back that i'd had an on-screen warning about the battery but now it's started beeping. Is battery failure imminent or will it last a little longer?

Good thing its only a quiet beep. The roar of the fans trying to cool the place down hides it well!

The battery is dying, basically if the power dies, your server might not have any time to shut down. If the battery is dead enough and the server hungry enough the power could die the second the electric goes off. Best to order a replacement asap, a lot easier than replacing Hard Disks and reinstalling your server.

It depends what the beep means of course, but I'd be replacing it as a matter of course given even if the battery is in a bad state now I doubt it'd shut down in enough time cleanly if a power cut occurred.

I would think if its been on the display and is now starting beeping it would be in your interest to change it ASAP.

What is running on the UPS - is it an important server etc? Its probably not worth the risk with the battery in that state.

Order a replacement battery or UPS, schedule some down time and swap it over as soon as you can.

Cool. Back to the head i go tomorrow....please sir, can i have some more...

Bit nervous about changing the battery. I think the APC shell is pretty newish, well 4 years anyway so it's probably cheaper to replace the actual battery. Hate messing with things like that....

Just follow the instructions and you'll be OK. Note especially the bits about what to disconnect and when

The only problem with changing the battery is that they can swell. If this has happened, it may be impossible to get the old battery out.

What I would do is arrange some time where you can shut down the server then unplug the UPS and try to remove the battery. If it comes out easily then replace it, if not then get a whole new UPS.

One other thing - not sure what size UPS you've got but if it's the APC 2200 then the battery is heavy (it's made of lead!) so you might want someone to help if you've got to move it and you'll definitely need someone to help fit the new one.

I'm having the same qualms about my UPS. Instead of trying to figure out which battery I needed I just bought another unit, rather larger one this time though. I have yet to fit it and not looking forward to that much with two servers to deal with. Maybe I just power down one first, get that running on the new UPS, wait awhile then do the other. (but not tomorrow)

I may do some pricing and see if its worth replacing the battery or just buying another unit..

and therein lies the advantage of a ups with internal bypass. ups maintenance without the server downtime, although i guess the problem there would be you end supplying 'dirty' power to the server.

APC battery change is usually as simple as disconnecting from the mains, pulling the front panel off, pulling the old battery out and pushing the new one in. As jobs go its a no brainer. Theres nothing dangerous, or scary to do, no screws or anything difficult at all.

Be prepared for a battle to take the old battery out as they tend to swell up a bit when they are old and can be a pain.
