I'm just wondering why anyone would used JBOD on a SAN? Serious question as I've never used JBOD for anything!

In theory you could expand the storage array using the JBODs drives, allowing to increase storage capacity when you need to without having to either purchase a huge amount to begin with or purchase a whole new unit

30th April 2009, 11:31 AM #64 Yeah, the ability to have a tray of sata drives to create an archival storage pool would be a significant selling point for those of us who don't need a lot of fast disk space, but do want archiving.

30th April 2009, 11:47 AM #65 The JBODs are just SAS storage arrays; I'm hoping to use it to expand on the current raid setup with SAS disks to provide massive expansion of storage at high speeds.

30th April 2009, 12:16 PM #66 So, I now have the latest roadmap from our Fishworks team in the USA. It is under strict NDA as it has all the good stuff we're doing with the S7000 for the next year onwards..
I am more than happy to talk to any of you about the roadmap but it has to be face-to-face and a signed NDA (sorry guys but that's the corporate stance) in place.
Depending on where you all are in the UK I could do a group session (if some of you are close to each other geographically) and I'll buy the biscuits.
Regards,
Phil

Yup, the "sparse" capability is exactly that.

My idea was to use the fast disks for virtual machines and use a separate JBOD to create a RAID-Z2 of bigger but slower SATA disks for archiving purposes. Now I just need to lure Phil to darkest Lincolnshire so I can find out whether it's possible.

I've not used the suns but would assume you just have a second tray of ata disks in a different raid group and present in one or multiple LUNs.

1st May 2009, 09:06 AM #71 Is the latest and greatest 7110 simulator available yet?

1st May 2009, 09:15 AM #72 Hi there,
The upgrade is available if you have the existing Simulator from this blog post but I've not yet seen a link to a 'new' one incorporating this upgrade.

Morning all!
The new simulator has appeared internally within Sun and it's a good 'un as they say!.
Big difference for the new simulator is that you can update this one with the patches as and when they are made available. also, we have both VMware and Virtual Box versions from day one.
The simulator is built on the latest 2009.Q2 build so you have all the latest wizzy features too.
It should appear on the Sun website next week (sorry for the delay) but if you cannot find it next week drop me a line and I'll burn a CD and pop it in the post.
Hope you all have a great weekend.
Regards,
Phil
PS I'm off to set up a customer S7410C this morning

1st May 2009, 09:50 AM #74 S7110 upgrade / expansion
Good morning,
I know that a number of you happy S7110 customers have been asking about the expandability and upgradability of the boxes you have already purchased so I though I'd share some stuff with you...
The S7110 was originally launched with 14 x 146GB drives for data. it has another 2 x 146GB drives for the application image. We have just announced the 4TB version which uses 300GB SAS drives.
Now on the subject of expanding the S7110 by adding JBODs underneath. At this time I am talking in detail with the Fishworks team in the USA about how we achieve this on the current S7110s. We have other 7000 versions that you can expand (S7210, S7310 (coming soon) and S7410).
I hope to have some concrete information next week and will update accordingly.
If you have any direct questions then please do not hesitate to contact me.
Regards,
Phil

Is it me or would the Edugeek Conference on 28 May be an ideal opportunity for you to take some of us aside and do the NDA group talk?
