Smartboard - Do I need original cables?
I have a few older smartboards using serial connections that I want to change to usb. I am getting quotes of just less than a £100 for a serial to usb cable.
Do I need to get an original cable?

£100? That's a little on the expensive side. You can buy a 10M Serial cable for £5 to £10 and a Serial to USB adapter for about £5. Gender changers are no more than £1. I'm not sure how someone can come to £100 unless this includes labour, testing and possibly trunking (if required).

Sounds like what happened to one of ours actually - newer cable seemed to do the trick though

Do the serial connections have a ps2 power connector as well? How does the smartboard get its power?
If you need power from the cable/laptop, you need a special cable (which probably is why you have been quoted a high price). You don't have to buy it from Smart - you can get them from anywhere. I just got one from Simon at CPLtd - It is called a USB-FRU cable and was under £50
2 Thanks to witch:

The board does need the ps2 connection, talking to CPltd about it at moment.
