leasing- need 3 quotes in school?
Hi when you want to lease quite a lot of new equipment like a server and 20 pcs and you are in an ordinary LA school, do you have to get 3 quotes, or is this only when you buy new equipment outright. Someone says that under "best value" , we have to get 3 quotes for leasing- is that correct?
thanks

23rd February 2009, 11:19 PM #3 You need to find out from your LA, these types of policies can vary wildly. It's much more likely to be value-based than quantity-based, and being a leasing agreement instead outright purchase can also make a difference.

Well 20 machines at £250 each would be £5000 or £500 each would be £10,000 so these are fairly big numbers for some schools. Getting three quotes has several benefits -
- Firstly, you'll get the best deal and have three comparatives (quotes)
- Secondly, you can get large orders authorised more easily by the Head and Governing Body (where appropriate)
- And thirdly, when the school get audited, you have evidence of getting the best deal by keeping all three of the quotes
I would say (as a general rule), anything above £3K you should shop around. It only takes a few phone calls or e-mails. Not very difficult

24th February 2009, 11:37 AM #8 Most LA schools say 3 quotes unless GCAT reg'd, like PC World (runs and hides in his bunker from attacks from others).
What is Catalist (formerly GCat)?
Don't ask me why, I mean PC World isn't normally the cheapest, technically, if you find a cheaper quote they have to bet or match it (excludes special offers)

so if you need 3 quotes for leasing ...
1.i assume you can specify makes of computers (even though some companies would prefer to lease you others, and others would be better "value")
1.I assume you dont need to justify what you then after seeing 3 quotes decide to go for to anyone in writing (or in triplicate)

25th February 2009, 01:19 PM #12 It would be worth speaking to the LA, as they may already have an arrangement with a leasing company - I know we have one which we are meant to use, which if we do we dont need to get additional quotes.

25th February 2009, 02:17 PM #13 Something in the back of the forgetery, tells me that if your LA and the supplier are part of the Central Buying Consortium, then there is no need to obtain quotes as the "best value" criteria have already been established.
