    Moving a smartboard installation

    Hello,

i am getting a bit of pressure from managment to move some whiteboard installations . This involes moving the pole and everything.

I have never even considered this as part of job as a network manager but my Predecessor did.

Any information on the best way to handle this?

    Re: Moving a smartboard installation

Even (!) caretakers aren't allowed to do any work above hand height nowadays. There needs to be the obligatory asbestos check on any surface tampered with, and my favourite getout is: you're not the competant person in law to do the job. If you're not trained, you can't do it. Nevermind what that last sentance of your job description says!

Yes i totally agree with Mark on this. just becuase it is classed as computer equipment it is not your job to install or re-install this type of equipment. get the people in who installed it in the first place, this will obviously be at a premium cost and will take time therefore having the desired result of management mybe changing their minds about moving them in the first place ok.

    good luck

    Statutory Instrument 2005 No. 735 [ http://www.opsi.gov.uk/si/si2005/20050735.htm#2 ]

    1: Interpretation
"ladder" includes a fixed ladder and a stepladder

    5: Competence
Every employer shall ensure that no person engages in any activity, including organisation, planning and supervision, in relation to work at height or work equipment for use in such work unless he is competent to do so or, if being trained, is being supervised by a competent person.

i have to agree with the general feeling in this thread to say i dont think it is the network managers job to have to move installations... espically things like whiteboards which many of us are not trainined to do

Yeah - my thought to myself is - who would be liable if this board/projector etc fell on a kid - they are heavy objects and could do some serious damage.

Problem here is that I'm better at putting things on the wall than the "professionals" that we get in. Nothing I've put up has ever fallen down unlike...

Nor do I consider that a pair of PC speakers are acceptable as a classroom “sound system”!

Get them to send you on a training course and amend your contract (with payrise for the increase in responsibilities)

A training course for putting screws into walls? That was part of my skill-set when taken on. More a "general A/V tech" than a Geek anyway...

As someone said you would be putting yourself in possable law suite if you moved and it and it fell of.

If do it then get letter signed from head saying that schools accepts you are not trained to do this and they accept full legal and morel consquences from you doing the work.

    Hmm - thinks... :: Fat Chance :: - lol

I've done building work and plenny stuff like this at home, and with my dad on several houses, and I do a 1st class job [IMHO ] ..that's not the point - you need training in current regulations. You're putting yourself at serious risk of legal action if anything goes wrong. I've done loads of stuff around school in the past, and I realise the risk - If you want to do it - then it's up to you. You'd be foolish to tho'.
