    Views On Lenovo ThinkPad SL500

Anyone here got any comments on the Lenovo ThinkPad SL500? Looking to purchase some for staff, and some to kit out a new laptop trolley.

Would usually go the Dell route but the cost of the new E series Latitudes is putting a halt to that.

Also what is Lenovos warranties like, any good?

    Cheers

Using Lenovo 3000 N500 models here and they seem to be solidly built. Certainly feel a lot better quality than the HP 6735 (i think) models they were getting at my last place. Thankfully not had a warranty issue to check their response yet. Rush_tech's experience is more akin to what I've had from Dell in the past, and the exact opposite from HP at the moment. If Rush_tech's experience is typical of Lenovo support then I for one am more than happy to continue buying Lenovo in the future.

We have 5 of the SL500s - we have loads of R61s, but my account manager was scrounging to find them the last time I ordered. They're not quite as robustly built as the R61s we've had, but more than acceptable - they work fine and the users are happy.

    Though they are fingerprint magnets.

Looking at the R61 vs SL500 there doesn't seem much difference in price. The SL500 has the addition of a webcam + card reader + extra USB and firewire. Is the build quality of the R61 that much better?

Also on the SL500 can you disable the wifi switch in the bios a la Dell?

Just looked over the specs out of curiosity. I'm wondering (partly because It's not too long before I'm going to need to buy another bunch) if it's worth the £70 (roughly, Misco's price) per laptop price difference for a Core 2 processor over a Core 1 processor (both dual core).

I'm comparing the 3000 N500 model @ £350 with the SL500 @ £420. Which OS are you going to run? We downgrade the N500's to XP Pro and they fly.

    Edit:
Also, the R61 doesn't appear to have a trackpad. Unless the teachers/students are already used to using the nipples you might not want to force the change on them. I'd stick with the SL500 if I was you (or N500 if you don't need the horse power).

I did lok at the N500 but really need a laptop with a rear power connection, plus the wireless-n and extra horse power should mean they last longer.

We have also got a Lenovo 3000 N500 here, and it is a very nice piece of kit, especially for the money. It feels solid enough, but as we have only had it a few months I can't comment on the longevity yet.

Personally, I quite like the fact that all the cables go into the side not the back, as our laptop is often used at parents' presentations, where they often see the back of it, and it looks much neater.
