Do you need colour?
We have 5 networked pc's in our staff room that are heavily used by student/trainee teachers. Also there are 22 network pint around the staff room for the staff to log in and use as and when with their laptops. As some staff (mainly in mobiles) do not have printers in their room we always map the 2 printers in the staff room to every member of staff laptop so they have printing options.
Currently we have 2 Brother 5170DN's in there for nearly two years( not much choice) but they they have took a right hammering over that time and are causing me more trouble than ever now. I would like to put a good robust/heavy duty laser in the staff room that would handle the volume sufficiently that the staff room takes.
Do you need colour?
Kyocera Mita or HP Laserjet.
second hp and kyocera.
We have HP 2300s, 2400s and kyocera colour lasers and *touches wood* they only have issues when users fiddle with them. If they're hammered during report times it's worth getting an additional paper tray. (he says, remembering the print queues with 30x 200 page jobs)
if you want a beastie look at the HP 4345 MFP, might be a touch expensive but its prolly faster than both the brothers put together and has a duty cycle of something dumb like 300K/month. It will double up as a copier/emailer if you need that sort of functionality and the staff would love you for it.
HP LJ4200 (or whatever they have been replaced with now)
Its the charging for consumables that you have to worry about. If staff get wind of place then can do free printing kiss your budget good bye.
Get HP, nothing else comes close in our experience. As for the model, that depends on the workload it is expected to handle. A 2420/2430 gets you up to 24ppm and up to 75000 pages per month. A 4250 gets 43ppm and 200,000 pages per month.
One (fairly obvious) thing I would say, if you do get HP get one with an inbuilt JetDirect network card. We've tried to save money in the past by buying a stand alone model and a third party print server, always ended up regretting it.
and if you have a copier in there, why not hook that up instead?
Either an HP Laserjet 4200/4250, or HP Laserjet 1320
I fully concur with Webman and others who specify the HP 4250 series we have 4 of these and at nearly 50 ppm they really serve the purpose well. cost of ownership is cheap as well pay for themselves within the warranty period. Static IP address install to print server and away you go with nothing to worry about. As for colour HP 4650n fantastic no probs have 4 of these, the one in the office is oldest nearly 4 years old and still going strong. XMA for toners and printers very cost effective.
Nothing like one of these babies to devastate the rain forests quicker hehe
We buy all of our printers from
Refurbed HP, currently buying the 4100's we had one come in the other day that had only done 9000 pages, we are still running a load of HP4's that have done close to a million pages.
We have 2 HP Laserjet 2300's in our sixth form and the little treasures havn't managed to break them in 2 years.
As a cheaper alternative the 1320 is also quite good.
Yep, we have 2300s and 1320s too.
As an aside, I had a flyer through from these people:
.. with very keen prices on it (1320n £211)
