    Speakers & Amp

    Hi,

Our school is after a set of new speakers inc an amp for their hall, does anyone have any recommendations? They will need to plug the usual into the amp. e.g laptops, cd player.

I have no idea about sound quality on vairous amps so i'm pretty stuck.

    many thanks!

Richer Sounds should be able to sort you out with something decent for a cheap price.

    How big is the hall?

Will the system be used for productions/drama?

    Will pupils be operating it?

And the best you will be able to say of it will be "Well it was cheap". If the hall is of ANY size, talk to someone who knows what they are talking about, or you will be replacing it very soon as it will either not do what you want, or blow up/trash the speakers.

To do this right first time will not be "cheap", but it will be cheaper than doing it twice.

If someone is insistent on "cheap" look at Thomann.de or Studiospares.com; they have some reasonable plastic speaker boxes, and small mixer amps. Or maybe some powered speakers and a mixer to go with them.

    ^ Yep agreed.

We've ended up with some Phonics stuff and although i wouldnt dream of using it myself its adiquate for the schools needs.

Got this mixer which again is fine for our school but as you can tell by the price tag it isnt exactly pro standard Yamaha MG124 C - Puredj

pupils will not be using this and its just for assemblies. We're not after top notch stuff, sort of medium stuff that wont break the bank. I'm not sure on the size of the hall, but i'll try and find out.

    thanks for your help guys.

EDIT: The hall is 20m by 10m (aka not very big!!)

I've used Matrix for a few of my schools now, not the cheapest but will do what you want and do it well, I'd recommend them
    Matrix Displays
    hope that's helpful

    Behringer Europort EPA800 - £368.50 (includes amp/mixer + speakers).
Add a pair of speaker stands - £29.50

Done. (Prices from www.studiospares.com - but give your nearest Digital Village a ring - they do educational discounts whereas StudioSpares don't.)

    See http://www.behringer.com/EPA800/index.cfm?lang=eng

Personally, we use a Soundcraft LX7-II 24ch mixer into dual ART 31 band graphics into Crown power amps with Drawmer outboard gates & comps, and a Sennheiser wireless array... but we do productions, gigs n' recordings etc - complete overkill for just doing assembly... Cheap n' cheerful does the job if that's ALL you want it to do...

I'd use studiospares myself, grab a power amp, a couple of suitable speakers, and a rackmount mixer (ie. not a full mixer, a little skinny one). And a little wall mount rack (probably a modular one, so as to not cover the wall in a giant box).

You should be able to do it for a £200/300 that way.

You might be better buying something on a trolley if install's going to be a pain. However, dont forget to comply with DDA, your supposed to have hearing loops in place now.
