Looking initially to do a test install and let users play with Windows SharePoint Services and after that could use the server to test install other software we get asked to put on the system.
Ramesys usually spec. and build up all our production servers so I don't normally get involved so any help would be appreciated.
Regards.

8th December 2008, 01:52 PM #2 We're going to virtualise our current print server box, and reuse the box for Sharepoint playing (probably)
It's a boggo P4/HT 3Ghz / 512mb rig, in a rack case that we inherited.
It will only be experimental, mind. I think the VM print server should fair kick bum..

8th December 2008, 02:42 PM #3 If your only going to use it as a test server with WSS you dont need anything more than a normal desktop with 1GB of RAM.
It all depends on the number of concurrent users.

9th December 2008, 09:33 AM #4 Yeah, we were testing Sharepoint on a P4 1.8Ghz with 512MB of RAM and 40GB IDE drive and it seemed fairly responsive.
But if you're being given the money go for the best you can! It will also inspire you to work harder at it if you have to justify the spend!

9th December 2008, 09:39 AM #5 another thing worth thinking about is if you want to test MOSS 2007 you will require 1024MB - The install will error if you have anything less so make sure you aren't using shared memory if you have 1GB in the box

9th December 2008, 05:37 PM #9 If you don't have a server you can use Amazons EC2 service
$0.25 per hour for a small server
Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) Running Microsoft Windows Server and SQL Server
