You'd be better off buying a USB to Serial cable to be honest. I don't think any newer laptops have them anymore.

My work Dell (a 630 Lattitude I think?) is reasonably new, and that has serial. USB serial is decent enough tho.

Yep, my 6-month old Latitude D630 has one; it's replacement (E series) was only launched a couple of months ago and is the first Latitude line not to have one on any model unless you buy an expansion dock.

Give our freinds at ICT Direct a ring (ICT Direct - laptop/notebook computers for ICT, education, schools, colleges) if you want a dedicated laptop for the task. They often have more systems than are shown on their site.

I had this problem. I ended up swapping a newer laptop for a 8 year old laptop from antoher school.

What do you want serial for? I found USBSerial adaptors to work perfectly well to access the serial console on our UTMs.

He's wanting it to EQ some speakers Tom (1st post he said it) I know from experience some audio kit is a little bit fussy with USB-Serial adaptors, I don't know what make he's EQing but there is some kit thats fussy in all areas, Siemens phone systems for one don't seem to like USB-Serial adaptors, or certainly the one I used to deal with didn't (maybe the fact it was an el-cheapo one perhaps who knows!) But I always keep an old laptop just for that job.

Glad to know your UTMs are fine with those adaptors though!!!!

Sorry - forgot to reread OP
Only major issue I have with USBserial is the COM port number often changes. I have'nt ever tried anything fancy with speakers though!

Try looking at the Toshiba Tecra A10-10P. We needed one for a milling machine which didnt take too kindly to the USB/Serial Converters
