    Unhappy HP 4700n printing sporadically

We have a networked hp laserjet 4700n that will only print if you have just switched it on. Leave it on for too long and it refuses to print. However it will print fine if it has just been switched on and then a job is sent.

    Any suggestions?

Can you still PING it when it refuses to print or does it refuse to talk to the network altogether?

Do you get any error message back from the printer? Do the jobs stick in the print spooler or are they eaten by the printer?

Are you running the latest firmware for the printer? The latest is version 46.034.1

    have just updated the firmware.

It prints the first document fine but then just shows as being offline if you try and print any more. The display on the printer itself says its ready.

Could try the embedded diagnostics (scroll down the page for instructions).

Failing that, I'd suggest a cold reset. For the 4700 I think the procedure is as follows:

    1. Turn the printer power off.
    2. Power on the printer and watch for the memory count to begin.
    3. Hold down the SELECT (Checkmark) button, when you see the memory count begin. Continue holding down the SELECT (Checkmark) button until all three printer control-panel lights flash once and then remain on. This might take up to 10 seconds.
    4. After the message SELECT LANGUAGE appears on the display, press the UP ARROW button or the DOWN ARROW button until COLD RESET appears on the display
    5. Press the SELECT (Checkmark) button. The printer performs a cold reset and then continues its power-on sequence.
This will of course reset ALL settings you have previously configured on the printer.

Or he could try updating/changing the drivers to postscript.......it worked for us as we had similar issues when using the supplied PCL drivers with the exact same model of printer.

I assumed he would have read your suggestion so didn't see the need to repeat it.

Have you got it set up so it has a static IP? Print out a test page from the printer when you cant ping it and check what IP address it holds.

Probably the Jet-direct card we had a one like this which would fail after the first print so we bought another from ebay and it has since been working fine.
Also PCL6 can be a problem we use PCL5 and they just work fine.
