Default Belkin UPS - shutting down?

I have a "Belkin Net Series 1000VA UPS (with AVR) " connected to my win2000 server. Over the last couple of nights I have come in to find that the server is off and so is the UPS, by pressing the "on" button on the UPS power is restored and I can then power up the server again (by pressing the button on the front of server)

Should the UPS restart the machine automatically if power is restored to it?

Do you think I may have a knackered UPS or perhaps we had a power cut during the night that I have no way of knowing about....

How do I tell if this is a legitimate shutdown from the UPS or the UPS has failed and the server simply went off.

Thanks for any help

Your server should have an event registered on it as well from the client shutting it down.
