    Hi there,

Was wondering if anyone out this is looking at, or has looked at the SMS100 by Hitachi - their new SAN?

Yes, we have one already, albeit still sitting in its box. It's going to be the basis of our new RM CC4 network.

Anyone considering this should also consider an HP MSA2000i, got one this summer and I am totally in love with it.

It's a little left field isn't it ? Two hidden drives, non-removable controllers, it's a bit expensive to be a commodity 'if something breaks we'll replace' array.

Defintely prefer hitachi's WMS100 or AMS200.....although a reduandant configuration of either of those is going to be way more expensive than the SMS range.

Anything from HDS is going to be well built hardware wise. So i'd have no qualms in using any of their products.

Be Aware of what you are buying

I have installed several of these units and the quality has been hit or miss. If there was every a time to use the phrase "You get what you pay for" now comes to mind.

I have used Hitachi Storage for close to 10 years and all other storage products from them are great... except this unit.

Essentially Hitachi thought it would be a good idea to sell this unit as a FRU (field replaceable Unit) unto itself. Unfortuanately the units are put together with some very flimsy parts.

Although the units come in dual controller models with redundand power and cooling, there is a single point of failure in the on-off switch as there is only one. If that switch goes you are hosed.

I would scrape up the extra money and look at the HP MSA2012i or even a NetApp 2020. (The iscsi license is free in the NetApp, unlike the other add on's)

    Good luck!

    Storage

Hitachi have always been excellent storage systems...didnt know this one had been released at this price point until now. I think i need to start paying more attention to Hitachi.

The HP MSA2000 in any of its several flavours is great...i have customers out there using all versions and having no issues. I hope any of you guys that do have issues with the units are relying on the reseller you purchased it from to push through any issues you have directly to HP. Its the resellers responsibility to take care of you.
