Hardware Monitoring / Notification
hey people,
this post has been prompted by the failure of our air con unit over night.. came in to be greeted with about 8 screaming servers running at a 42c+ ambient temperature.
of course... id rather know about these sorts of things when they happen, rather than finding out 5hours after.
all of the servers have openmanange on them but for some reason they dont have alert notification?
i know i could set nagios up... but i'm not sure if it would pick up on the SNMP traps that openmanage provides?
what do you guys use? new building in 4 weeks time... and the new server room is a lot smaller. if the a/c fails in there the rooms going to be hitting rediculous temperatures in no time!
thanks people... rooms currently 36c

I've had Nagios running on an old laptop supporting all but sms text messages. Free and relatively simple to setup. Just follow the howto's i was running ubuntu 7.10.
Hope this helps.

i know dell are a little bit weird when it comes to monitoring sometimes

2nd June 2008, 04:29 PM #6 i have one of these The Original Climate - Home a nice bit of kit an not too expensive.
It has 8 sensors built in, light, noise, humidity, temp, etc...
It will email and SMS but email is good enough for me

2nd June 2008, 04:32 PM #7 We use Monit for service monitoring on the servers, which sends us an email. It also sends to a Email-to-Twitter service which updates our "IT Support" Twitter account which we can follow, thus free SMS notifications

2nd June 2008, 04:40 PM #8 I've had a couple of brochures for the InterSeptor, an environmental monitoring server:
Data Centre Temperature Monitoring
Seems to be reasonable value, several resellers are trying to flog us one.

HP and Elonox and unbranded intel servers. You can also monitor some printers. In theory it should work with any windows box as you have install a client.
I must admit I did use open manage and you can set that up for email notifications not sure about sms though.
I have not yet set Nagios up with Linux box yet but is very possible.
I think you an also get a flasher gui web interface than that provided byt the Nagios install but i am not sure what it is.

2nd June 2008, 08:42 PM #10 I have a one of the environmental monitor cards for my APC. I wanted a solution that would actually *do* something about the heat. I can get all the texts I want, but I'm not able to get into the building to shut things down!

Just a quick question - are you a keyholder or would your caretaker open up if you rang him in the middle of the night if you were alerted that your aircon had stoppped working? I don't think ours would.
