We're looking at the Canon A460 or (for a little more) A560, both available in the Tesco catalouge. Both take stills and video and have a 4X optical zoom. They take memory cards and standard-sized batteries, so you can buy standard batteries and chargers.

I bought my son a Pentax E35 from currys a few weeks ago for £49.99
7M pixels, SD card AA batteries with video...he used it on a trip to Germany and came back with some very good shots.

if you've got some tesco vouchers handy you could get some cameras from them.... the tuffcams look quite good...
