25th April 2008, 08:59 PM #3 Not quite the offer I got from SCC a couple of months ago...
Sun X2200 M2:
* 2x 2218 dual-core Opteron processor
* 8GB RAM
* 2x 146GB 15k rpm SAS disks
* Shiny metal 1u case
IIRC £2600-ish
Sounds about average... until you realise they chucked in a second one FOC!

Still begging to replace 20 machines this year out of a total of 230.
I need to buy machines that last for 10 years at least

Where did you get that from? I'm after something like that spec to run as a VMWare ESX server, then all I need is a decent SAN and I'm away.

Must have been from the back of a yellow reliant robin!
The first one comes out well under the trade price!
Therefore they must be an LA Micro grey import!
I have no idea how they do this but I bet the HMCE know!
Remember how we used to get cheap cars from the EU!
You can't knock them for VFM but I am not sure if the warranty is as good as they claim it is.
I have had HP stuff from the US before and had it repaired here under global warranties without any issues so I'm not going to doubt their word however I would not be prepared to resell these.
If your buying direct for your own use or the schools, verify the warranty by registering the serial numbers with HP as soon as you can and if there is a problem get this cleared up straight away. You don't want to have a problem in two years time only to find they will not honour them for some strange reason.
My wife Yaris was a grey import, it gave us 5 years of trouble free use and was still like new when we sold it, but the Merc dealer I tried to part ex it with ran it through the computer and it came up as an import straight away and he dropped the part ex value by £2000 straight away!
Needless to say we sold it privately for the full asking without telling the buyer it was an import!
Looks like a really good deal, even if it is a grey.

I was responding to the thread starter and the HP's.
With certain quadcore prices being cut by up to 50% many of the big boys are dumping current built stocks fast.
I am afraid I don't like Dell as I have had too many bad experiences with after sales, the kit's OK though.
I bought a 2 x 2.5Ghz Quad system today for less than £1350 !!
Just to run my Windows 2008 EBS system on in a Virtual Sandbox, don't you just love toys

29th April 2008, 10:16 PM #12 Bought them from misco, but be careful, HP are giving out duff info to suppliers on the system i got. They only come with one PSU.

29th April 2008, 10:50 PM #13 Misco -eh!
With the volume of brochures, flyers and specials they publish every week it's quite possible they will make a mistake and you my friend might have found one.
Even with one psu it's still less than trade.
Some of these guys operate in a buying partnership and buy large batches so cheap that even the big distributors can't match.
I recently bought 2 x HP Raid 5 Rack Servers very cheap that when shipped turned out to be Raid 0 Towers.
The supplier gave me the Rack conversion kits and the raid controllers FOC after I pointed out the web site description errors. That mistake cost them at least £250 each.
If it say's 2 x DC PSU's why not push your luck! No harm in trying @ £110 each your bargin is shrinking into a small discount.
DL380's also had a buy one get one free cash back offer on certain CPU's this month!
HP ProLiant Free Processor Offer - 1st Apr ? 30th Apr 2008
Were you offered this option?
