My laptop has an onboard gigabit lan socket but it uses the main processor, and tops out at about 12MB/s.
Im trying to find a gigabit ethernet expresscard that has its own processor but cant seem to find any.. Anyone know of one?

Are you sure about this? 12MB/s is approx. 96Mbps which is uncannily close to 100Mbps - do you see where I am going? - is it a gigabit connection?
Also, how are you measuring this 'speed'?

yeh its def a gigabit onboard card. measuring it via ftp client upload and downlaods to the server and bwmon on the server. The CPU also maxes out during a big transfer, and if the CPU is busy doing something else the transfer drops to like 2000k/s. To be exaxt it maxes out between 12,000kb/s and 14000kb/s
Had the same problem on the server till I put in some decent Intel PCI nics with their own processor.
